Tulum has become a victim of its own Instagram fame, but a smart base and an early alarm still gives you ruins, cenotes and pristine beaches.
Where to stay
Tulum Pueblo (the town) is half the price of the beach strip and has the best food. Stay in town, taxi or bike to the beach. The beach hotel zone is glamorous but cripplingly expensive.
How to get there
Fly into Cancún (CUN) from any major UK airport. Shuttle/colectivo to Tulum is about 2h. The new Tulum airport (TQO) also has some direct routes.
Don't miss
Tulum ruins right at opening (8am). A morning swim at Cenote Dos Ojos. A boat trip into Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve.
