Santorini is the postcard of the Cyclades — sugar-cube houses spilling down volcanic cliffs into impossibly blue water. Beneath the Instagram gloss is a working island of fishermen, winemakers and slow village evenings.
Where to stay
Oia is the icon but books up months ahead and is busiest at sunset. Imerovigli sits higher on the caldera with the same view and half the crowds. For a quieter, cheaper base look at Pyrgos or Megalochori inland.
How to get there
Fly into Santorini (JTR) direct from most European hubs in summer, or take the high-speed ferry from Athens (5h) or Crete (2h). The ferry is dramatic — you arrive looking up at the cliffs.
Don't miss
Hike the caldera path from Fira to Oia at golden hour (10km, mostly downhill). Book a catamaran cruise around the volcano. Skip the donkey rides.
