Rome is messy, loud, sometimes infuriating and completely unrepeatable. The trick is to alternate one big sight a day with long lunches.
Where to stay
Monti is the perfect base — central, walkable, full of small restaurants and not yet ruined by tour groups. Trastevere is the evening neighbourhood. Avoid anywhere advertising 'near Termini'.
How to get there
Fly into Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) from any UK city. The Leonardo Express train from FCO to Termini takes 32 minutes.
Don't miss
Pre-book the Colosseum for first slot of the day. Eat cacio e pepe at Felice a Testaccio. Walk from the Pantheon to Trevi to Spanish Steps after dinner when they empty out.
