Interlaken & the Bernese Alps

Turquoise lakes below Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau

Interlaken sits between two lakes with the Jungfrau massif rising behind — the launchpad for some of Europe's most jaw-dropping day trips.

Where to stay

Base in Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald rather than Interlaken itself — you wake up in the mountains rather than a shopping street. Wengen (car-free) is the splurge.

How to get there

Fly to Zurich or Basel, then a 2h scenic train — Swiss rail runs on the minute and the Zurich–Interlaken line is a highlight in itself.

Don't miss

The cable car up Schilthorn for the 360° Bond-film panorama. The First Cliff Walk. A swim in Lake Brienz's absurdly blue water.

Highlights

  • Schilthorn
  • Lauterbrunnen valley
  • Grindelwald First
  • Lake Brienz
