Iceland is the easiest big-landscape trip from the UK — a 3-hour flight and you're driving past waterfalls, hot springs and lava fields the size of counties.
Where to stay
Reykjavík for two nights, then a self-drive of the South Coast or full Ring Road. Outside the capital, book guesthouses early — there aren't many of them.
How to get there
Direct from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh to Keflavík (KEF) in around 3 hours. Hire a 4x4 if you're going beyond the South Coast in winter.
Don't miss
Bathe at the Sky Lagoon (Blue Lagoon's smaller, better-located cousin), drive to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon at sunrise, and skip the aurora bus tour — chase them yourself.
