Dubrovnik in July is a cruise-ship parking lot. In shoulder season it's the dazzling walled city it should be — and you can swim off the rocks at sunset.
Where to stay
Old Town inside the walls is magical but you'll lug bags up stairs and pay a premium. Lapad peninsula is quieter, has beaches, and a 25-minute walk in.
How to get there
Direct flights from London, Manchester, Bristol to Dubrovnik (DBV) — 3h. The airport bus to Old Town is €10 and runs every flight.
Don't miss
Walk the walls at 8am sharp (when they open) before the heat. Take the cable car up Mount Srđ for sunset. Spend a day on Lokrum island — €27 ferry, swim everywhere.
