Cairo is loud, dusty, ancient and utterly unforgettable — a city where you can stand in front of a 4,500-year-old wonder and then get stuck in traffic beside it.
Where to stay
Zamalek (island in the Nile) is the calmest, greenest base with the best restaurants. Downtown for grit and character. Giza only if you want the pyramids from your window.
How to get there
Direct flights from London to Cairo (CAI) in 5h. Pre-book a driver for airport pickup — negotiating cabs jet-lagged at 2am is not a highlight.
Don't miss
The new Grand Egyptian Museum — bigger and better than the old one. Sunset felucca sail on the Nile. Koshari at Abou Tarek.

- Giza Pyramids
